On January 1, 2018 the NAECA 3 efficiency standards for commercial water heaters takes effect.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) adopted the NAECA 3 standards in 2016.

This standard reclassifies certain commercial tank type water heaters into the consumer water heater category, which subjected them to the new Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) efficiency description.
Units mostly effected are commercial electric water heaters with less than or equal to 12 kw, which do not meet the .95 EF (Efficiency rating).

If you would like to read the U.S. Department of Energy NAECA 3 efficiency standards report go to:

( If you can read AND understand this, you are a better person than I am!!)

All water heater manufactures have both residential and commercial water heaters that will be effected.
Since Wallingford Sales Company sells only the commercial lines of A.O. Smith and Rheem water heaters, I will address those.

Rheem:
The Rheem commercial electric water heater models that will be effected are the ELD66, ELD80 and ELD120.
These models will be discontinued.

A.O. Smith:
The A.O. Smith commercial electric water heater models that will be effected are:

  1. DEL and DEN series: 30 – 50 gallons. These are being redesigned with more insulation and will be larger.
  2. DEL and DEN series: 60 – 119 gallons: These will be offered in 12.2 KW/480 volt only.
  3. DRE and DVE series: 30 – 119 gallons: inputs of 12 kw and below will be discontinued.
  4. DSE series: 30 – 119 gallons: inputs of 12 kw and below will be discontinued.
  5. LTE and DCE series: 60 – 119 gallons will be offered at 12.2 kw only.

A.O. Smith is projecting up to a 7% price increase for the DEL and DEN models due to NAECA 3 efficiency standards.
