With approximately 40 to 65 percent of college students living in dorms, the amount of water used each day in college residence halls alone is outstanding. Just like if they were at home, students use hot water in numerous different ways including:

    • Laundry
    • Showering
    • Small kitchens; and
    • Washing hands.

But, what happens when the dorm water heater goes out? Either the front desk phone begins to ring nonstop with complaints or students are wearing dirty clothes and not showering.

College dorms are facilities with high demands for hot water but more specifically the water needs to be in many different places at one time. For example, when all the students decide to wash their laundry on Sunday the supply of hot water needs to be available for the laundry rooms. This requires the correct water heater to be efficient for meeting those needs.

At some point in time everyone has experienced a cold shower, but trying to take a hot shower in a college dorm can be a challenge. When 100 people are trying to get clean at 7:30 a.m. before class, the warm water supply might become easily scarce. This is when having the proper water heater is beneficial.

Several options

There are at least two options for selecting the correct water heater. The first recommendation is installing one or several heavy-duty water heaters, with the number required depending on the size of the residence hall. Another option would be to use several smaller water heaters that work together to meet the high demands. We at Wallingford Sales Company offer many types of commercial water heaters that might help college dormitories including tankless water heaters, heavy-duty water heaters and many other types of water heaters.

Now that the majority of college students have moved back home for the summer, it is the perfect time to replace the old water heater in the residence halls.
